is that important in modern presidential politics. both the romney and the obama campaigns are out stumping tonight. mitt romney and president obama have 50 possible states to fight over. they have nine or so swing states that seem to actually be in play. tonight mitt romney and barack obama are both in just one state. mr. romney appearing with chris christie and rob portman in akron, ohio. the president showing up with will.i.am. >> buckeyes, we need you. we need you fired up. >> ohio is going to elect me the next president of the united states. >> all the interest in competing in ohio, the desperate need to win the election in ohio, the dualing rallies and the ground games, all that comes from the context of a big surprising decision in ohio this afternoon. about how the election is going to be run there this year. back in 2004, the night that the democratic ticket decided not to concede the race on election night because they were waiting on results. part of what was happening in '04 was this. these horrendous epic lines for ohio voters. they waited ten hours and more in ohio in 2004 to cast a v

. obama would like to have spending end up at 23%. romney and ryan both want it down at 20%. so there's a clear difference, and they all agree on where it should go. what gets interesting is as you dig into the detail of what gets cut, and you'll see some very, i think, fascinating differences among these guys. so on social security, as you heard president obama say in the last debate, the three guys are actually in the same place. they want to spend the same amount on social security in the next ten years. when you get to medicare, romney and ryan are in the same place, but romney actually a as you also heard him say, wants to repeal the $716 billion. it's actually $900 billion of cuts. he would spend more on medicare than ryan or obama. and then you have obamacare. >> let me ask you really quickly. if anybody has heard, let me know. has mitt romney said what he wants to do with the $716 billion? >> essentially it would be used to get his spending down to that 20% level because you're going to see in a minute, he has a bunch of other places he wants to spend money. >> spend the $716

, of course, would romney be as motivated to work across the aisle if, for example, both the senate and the house nationally are republican controlled in that case he would likely be facing a lot of people thinking exactly the way ante tax crusader grover norquist summed it up. watch norquist in action. >> we are not auditioning for fearless leader. we don't need a president to tell us what direction to go. we know what direction we want to go. we want the paul ryan budget which cuts spending $6 trillion. the republicans in the house have passed 24-plus bills that create jobs and opportunity and strip out regulations. we just need a president to sign this stuff. and pick a republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the united states. >> you know, that's not an unfair shot. he basically believes he has those pledges in his pocket. he knows he can control fiscal policy in the congress with or without the new president. he's got romney's arms tied in the same way that the religion right has his arms tied on abortion rights, same-sex, the way the knee o

're both there. romney kicks off a two-day ohio journey, he'll be back in ohio again on friday. meanwhile the president holds an evening rally at ohio state university in columbus. by the way romney starts his day on a family farm in central iowa. another midwestern battleground state. paul ryan does his debate prep today in florida. the vice president signalled a new urgency to voters saying, quote, i very much sbeintend ton this election, but we're only going to do it if everybody is obsessive between now and then. >> we cannot afford to be complacent and we can't afford to be cynical. we can't do it if you've got someone who writes off half the nation before the election, but it's not going to happen if half the nation writes off itself by not voting. >> i had a bunch of people say don't be so polite, don't be so nice. i want everybody to understand something. what what was being presented wasn't leadership, that's cease manship. . >> and then the president took the muppets attack on mitt romney. turning the says my street comments from romney about ending federal subsidies into pbs in

in iowa, right now mitt romney is standing both for it and against it. and at this point, in a presidential campaign, that is not tenable, not for long. also, second point, while trying to get away with this idea that he's not in favor of legislation to restrict abortion rights, despite his record to the contrary, it should be noted that mitt romney picked as his vice presidential nominee an anti-abortion absolutist named paul ryan, a man who has co-sponsored 38 anti-abortion measures in congress. who today outside an ice cream shop in florida said there is zero daylight between his and mitt romney's ideas on this subject. what paul ryan believes on abortion mitt romney believes to. right down to redefining rape in co-sponsorship with todd akin? is that included? mr. romney said today under duress that the romney/ryan position is the romney/ryan position, there's no difference between them. and he said you'll hear more about it at the vice presidential debate tomorrow. i bet you will. joining us now is steve kornacki, co-host of "the cycle." thanks for being here. >> than

". thank you both for joining me tonight. >> thank you. >> congresswoman, let me go to you first. newt gingrich admits governor romney has changed. how will he answer this in the next 29 days? >> well, we have to double down and demand the truth and who do you trust becomes the real question now but you can't going from saying we shouldn't hire more teachers to saying, i love teachers. we need more. you can't say you're against the dodd/frank bill and then say, oh, yes, wall street needs regulation. and you can't say that you're supportive of medicare when your plan is essentially to get rid of medicare as we know it, to end it and turn it into a voucher program that won't even keep up with inflation. we have to make sure that the truth gets out and we have to demand the answers from mitt romney. who are you? the president was right when he said, who was that guy that showed up on the debate night. >> michelle, isn't that the real point, despite some surrogates saying it's typical, isn't this too far toward the opposite side of what he represented in the primary? >> well, this is what

has to defend his record. that changes things for incumbents as well. >> mitt romney said on wednesday, mr. president, you are not entitled to your own facts. both sides said it. now there is an argument over what the facts are. when we talk about bipartisanship, how do you reach compromise? >> it's a fund mental problem for sure. also a problem when you have politicians who, frankly, have taken centrist positions, lot of positions. if you're going out there as mitt romney did and say, i am the bipartisan healer. i can find compromise, you cannot. you have to talk, communicate in ways that suggest you will do that. it's not enough to say, i'm strong, i'm a leader. you have to be reasonable in that debate. for him to say when the numbers come down they are outrageous. if the numbers are high, that's cool. that leaves you no room to find middle ground. you're poisoning the well for the next time you're in government and in office. that's the danger we have here. it's all short-term. everything we have seen especially from the romney campaign is about the group of people he's with at that

of the senate if they can get four seats, if romney wins the white house that number drops to three. welcome both. i'm guessing this is the only time you put on suits now. does the winner of the presidential decide control of the state senate? there's no question that it impacts races. we have said from the beginning that we think senate races can stand on their own. >> if mitt romney wins the presidency, what chances do democrats have of retaining control of the united states? >> when you look at the battleground states that you listinged. after of those states are republican held seats. >> can you gain control if president obama wins re-election? >> sure, chuck and here's why, we're win right now in connecticut, we're winning in wisconsin. we got a little separation last week or so. governor romney's strong performance, really the resurgence for the party so we feel like we have a great path to the majority with or without governor romney winning. >> let me start with a virginia. can george allen win without mitt romney carrying the state? >> obviously it would be easier if romney won the
